US and India Enhance Strategic Cooperation

In a recent conversation, US President Donald Trump reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the ongoing situation in West Asia, which has escalated over the past three weeks. Elbridge Colby, the US undersecretary of war for policy, emphasized the growing alignment and collaboration between the two nations on strategic issues. He stated that effective cooperation does not require complete agreement on all matters. Speaking at the Ananta Centre, Colby remarked that differences and disputes can coexist with a strong partnership, which is rooted in mutual strategic interests rather than mere appearances.

These remarks come in the wake of previous tensions regarding tariffs, particularly after Trump announced a 50 percent tariff on Indian exports due to the country's importation of Russian crude oil. However, this issue has since been resolved, paving the way for a free trade agreement between India and the US. During discussions with Indian defense officials, Colby highlighted the importance of military power in maintaining regional stability and noted that defense cooperation is crucial for enhancing real capabilities.

Over recent years, bilateral defense collaboration has intensified, with more complex military exercises, improved information sharing, and routine cooperation on both regional and global scales. Colby pointed out that Indo-US cooperation would encompass areas such as long-range precision strikes, resilient logistics, maritime awareness, anti-submarine warfare, and advanced technologies. He acknowledged India's commitment to self-reliance, or atmanirbhartata, while also advocating for increased US sales of defense systems and joint development initiatives.

Colby referred to India as a 'waxing power' capable of playing a pivotal role in maintaining a favorable balance of power in the Indo-Pacific region. Although he did not specifically mention Europe, he indicated that under Trump's leadership, the US is on the rise, contrasting this with the uncertain status of some traditional allies, urging them to revitalize their efforts.
