This year marks a century of dynamic sporting relations between the two nations. Modi's trip to New Zealand, which is the first by an Indian Prime Minister in four decades, concludes his three-nation tour that also included stops in Indonesia and Australia. He shared his thoughts on X, stating, 'Sports have always been a strong bridge between India and New Zealand. This year, we are also marking a century of vibrant sporting ties.'
Innovations in Sports
During his visit, PM Modi also discussed how technology and creativity are revolutionizing sports and enhancing bilateral relations. He mentioned attending a Sporting Showcase in Auckland with PM Luxon, where they explored various advanced sporting innovations. Modi expressed his excitement about how these advancements are not only shaping the future of sports but also fostering closer ties between the two countries.
Joint Action Plan for Sports
Earlier, PM Modi participated in a Gala Lunch hosted by New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. He reiterated the significance of the newly established India-New Zealand Joint Action Plan on Sport, which aims to broaden cooperation beyond cricket. Modi highlighted a recent coaching initiative by New Zealand Rugby and Rugby India in Bhubaneswar as a promising start to this collaboration.
Rugby Coaching Program
The partnership in sports has already gained traction with a two-day high-performance coaching program organized by Rugby India and New Zealand Rugby at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar in May. This initiative, conducted under the Memorandum of Cooperation on Sport, included classroom sessions, practical demonstrations, and workshops led by experts from New Zealand Rugby.
Celebrating a Century of Unity
According to the India-New Zealand Joint Statement, both Prime Ministers welcomed the celebrations for '100 Years of Unity Through Sport' in 2026. They endorsed the Joint Action Plan as a framework to enhance cooperation in high-performance sports, coaching, sports science, participation, sports business, and exchanges between national sporting organizations.
