Canberra, Sep 10: Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, the Chief of the Indian Navy, met with Rear Admiral Anita Williams, the Commander of the Australian Fleet, at the significant naval base HMAS Kuttabul in Sydney on Thursday.
The discussions primarily revolved around the advancements in the Australian Navy's maritime capabilities and strategies to enhance operational collaboration between the Indian and Australian navies.
As per the Indian Navy's announcement on social media, the dialogue included topics such as the Australian Navy's fleet enhancements and future plans, as well as opportunities to improve interoperability and operational cooperation between the two naval forces. Admiral Swaminathan was also given a tour of HMAS Kuttabul, showcasing its fleet infrastructure and operational strengths.
Admiral Swaminathan commenced his three-day official visit to Australia on Wednesday, with the objective of bolstering naval cooperation between the two countries.
The Indian Navy's post on social media highlighted, "Advancing India-Australia Maritime Partnership. Adm Krishna Swaminathan, CNS, is on an official visit to Australia from 9-11 Sep 26 and will engage with senior defence leadership. Discussions will focus on further strengthening Indian Navy-Aus Navy cooperation with emphasis on operational interaction, interoperability and information sharing, training, professional exchanges and emerging maritime capabilities."
Furthermore, the visit signifies the increasing engagement between the two navies and their commitment to ensuring a secure, stable, and resilient Indo-Pacific region.
During his stay, Admiral Swaminathan is also scheduled to meet with senior officials from the Australian defence sector.
These discussions will provide a platform to assess ongoing naval collaborations and identify new opportunities for enhancing operational interaction, interoperability, information sharing, training, and professional exchanges between the two nations' navies, as stated by the Ministry of Defence.
The Ministry further noted that Admiral Swaminathan's visit is a continuation of the strengthening ties between India and Australia, following the third India-Australia Annual Summit in July and the Second India–Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue in June.
India and Australia have been actively working to enhance their cooperation in defence and security, particularly in maritime security and regional collaboration.
After his engagements in Australia, Admiral Swaminathan will proceed to New Zealand for discussions with the senior leadership of the Royal New Zealand Navy and other defence officials.
