Strengthening Mining Practices in Northeast India: A Collaborative Approach

Union Minister Advocates for Enhanced Mining Collaboration
Guwahati, June 27: On Friday, G Kishan Reddy, the Union Minister for Coal and Mines, underscored the importance of improved collaboration between the Centre and state governments to attract investments, foster innovation, and encourage sustainable mining practices in the northeastern states.
During his address at the second North East Mining Ministers’ Conclave in Sonapur, Guwahati, Reddy remarked, “Our goal is to enhance mining operations in the Northeast through collaborative efforts with state authorities, exploration agencies, and public sector undertakings.”
He also pointed out the environmental issues, such as landslides, that frequently affect the region, emphasizing the necessity for coordinated strategies to mitigate these challenges.
“To address landslide risks, several memorandums of understanding have been established today between the Government of India, its public sector units, and exploration agencies,” he stated.
In a social media update, Reddy mentioned that the conclave signifies a significant move towards sustainable mining, improving the business environment, and strengthening the synergy between the Centre and states. He anticipates that this will spur future investments, innovation, and inclusive growth in the Northeastern Region.
Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that his administration would soon issue a comprehensive order allowing the Centre to explore Assam's mining capabilities.
Sarma stated, “We will permit the Government of India to conduct geological surveys throughout the state,” adding that a strategic plan has already been devised for mineral exploration in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong, focusing on rare earth elements and other essential minerals.
He also shared that the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) has successfully completed three exploration initiatives in Assam targeting limestone, iron, and sillimanite.
Additionally, he announced that the auction process for seven limestone blocks in Dima Hasao is currently in progress.
“Five blocks have been auctioned successfully, while two are in the second bidding phase. Our aim is to operationalize at least one block by December 2025,” Sarma noted.
Encouraging the northeastern states to play an active role in national development, the Chief Minister stated, “The revenue generated from these activities will remain with the states. We aspire to shift from being dependent to becoming contributory states in India’s developmental journey.”
