Reasons Behind the Loss of Hosting Rights

Concerns regarding government interference in cricket administration have led to Sri Lanka losing its hosting rights, according to the report. This event was supposed to be Sri Lanka's second ICC tournament within a year, following their co-hosting of the Men's T20 World Cup in 2026.

Current Administration Issues

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is currently managed by an interim body known as the Transformation Committee, which was appointed by the government to implement significant reforms, including constitutional changes. The ICC does not recognize cricket boards that are governed by politically appointed bodies, and since the establishment of the Transformation Committee, SLC representatives have not participated in ICC Board meetings.

Consequences for Sri Lanka's Team

The Champions Trophy includes the top six teams in the ICC rankings, with Sri Lanka currently positioned seventh. The top five teams are Australia, England, India, New Zealand, and South Africa, while the West Indies hold the sixth spot. The relocation of the tournament could significantly affect Sri Lanka's qualification, as they were initially set to participate due to their hosting status.

A Pattern of Hosting Issues
