Fire Incident Causes Major Train Service Interruptions
A fire near Penn Station in New York City led to extensive travel disruptions on Friday morning, halting train services for several hours and leaving thousands of commuters stranded along the Northeast Corridor. Officials reported that the fire ignited overnight in a maintenance vehicle operated by Amtrak, located near the Hudson River tunnel that connects to Penn Station. Although the fire was extinguished, it caused considerable damage to overhead wires, impacting rail operations between New York and New Jersey.
At least five individuals sustained injuries related to the incident. Amtrak announced the suspension of services through Penn Station until at least noon, alerting passengers to significant delays and cancellations affecting various East Coast routes. Disruptions were expected to continue into the afternoon for trains connecting New York with southern destinations.
Additionally, NJ Transit halted train services in both directions during the morning rush hour due to the infrastructure damage caused by the two-alarm fire. Penn Station, situated beneath Madison Square Garden, is one of the busiest transit hubs in the U.S., accommodating around 600,000 passengers daily through Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road, New Jersey Transit, and the New York City subway system.
While the Long Island Rail Road resumed limited service later in the day, officials indicated that ongoing equipment issues continued to cause delays and cancellations throughout the morning. This incident added to the recent transit challenges in the New York area, as earlier this month, operations of the Long Island Rail Road were temporarily suspended due to a labor strike that affected approximately 250,000 daily commuters traveling between New York City and its suburbs.
The fire led to significant chaos for commuters, with many passengers crowding the stations and seeking alternative transportation options while rail authorities worked to restore normal service. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigations are currently underway.
