Shreyas Iyer Commends Team's Grit

Christchurch [New Zealand], October 24: After India's exhilarating triumph against New Zealand in the second T20I, captain Shreyas Iyer praised Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy for their remarkable resilience. He also highlighted Naman Dhir's pivotal role in reversing India's fortunes following a mid-innings collapse. Chasing a target of 181 runs, India found themselves in a precarious position, slipping from 40/0 to 70/5 within just over ten overs. However, Naman's impactful innings of 31 runs off 17 balls, which included a four and three sixes, reignited India's hopes and provided momentum for Tilak (51* off 26 balls, featuring six fours and a six) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (26* off 13 balls, with a four and a six), ultimately securing victory with one ball to spare and four wickets remaining.

Naman Dhir's All-Round Contribution

In the post-match presentation, Iyer remarked, "Every player in our squad is capable of winning matches, and today was a testament to that. When we lost several wickets in quick succession, it felt like the match was slipping away. However, Tilak and Reddy displayed incredible character, complemented by Naman Dhir's impressive cameo." Iyer further praised Naman, who has been a standout performer for Team India with both bat and ball, calling him a "remarkable bowler" and a "well-rounded player." He noted, "We witnessed his skills in previous matches against the West Indies. He excels in both batting and bowling, contributing significantly to the team's dynamics, and his fielding is equally impressive." During the match, Naman also bowled an over, conceding only seven runs.

Challenges and Match Summary

Iyer acknowledged the challenge posed by New Zealand's spinners, Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell, admitting that India faced difficulties with too many dot balls early on. He stated, "We played an excessive number of dot balls at the start, which affected our run rate. Our intention was to play smoothly, but they bowled exceptionally well, particularly Bracewell and Santner, who controlled the game during the middle overs. It wasn't easy to score, but had we found the gaps and aimed for boundaries, we could have cruised through. Unfortunately, it was just one of those days, but I am confident we will bounce back strongly."

In the match, India won the toss and opted to bowl first, reducing New Zealand to 41/3 during the powerplay. Glenn Phillips (70 runs off 46 balls, including four boundaries and six sixes) and Bevon Jacobs (58 runs off 46 balls, with five fours and a six) orchestrated a recovery for New Zealand, forming a 116-run partnership for the fourth wicket and guiding them to a total of 180/5 in 20 overs. Arshdeep Singh took 2 wickets for 33 runs, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prince Yadav, and Nitish Kumar Reddy each claimed one wicket.

While chasing the target of 181, India faced a dramatic collapse from 40/0 to 112/6, with Mitchell Santner taking four wickets in the middle overs. However, Naman Dhir's quickfire 31 runs off 17 balls reignited hope, and it was Tilak (51* off 26 balls, with six fours and a six) and Nitish (26* off 13 balls, with a four and a six) who guided India to victory with one ball remaining. India now leads the five-match series 2-0.
