Shooting Incident at White House Correspondents' Dinner: Key Officials Safe
Shooting at High-Profile Event
During the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday night, a shooting incident occurred, but US President Donald Trump remained unharmed. Several senior officials were evacuated from the event following reports of gunfire. A volunteer at the dinner reported seeing the alleged shooter assembling what appeared to be a lengthy firearm in a less monitored area near a terrace entrance before he opened fire and advanced towards the ballroom.
Witness Helen Mabus, from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, described the location as a makeshift room where bar carts were stored, noting the absence of security at that moment. She recounted, “He was in that room […] he grabbed it out of a bag or something,” adding that the weapon “was long” and “didn’t look like a typical gun.” Mabus observed the suspect was partially shielded from security while handling the weapon before he rushed towards the main event area. “He put it together and […] ran towards the stairs to go down to the ballroom,” she explained.
Once in the ballroom, the gunman began firing in various directions, causing guests and staff to flee in panic. Mabus estimated she heard “at least 10 shots,” describing the scene as chaotic with people “screaming and running” while Secret Service and armed personnel rushed to the scene. She escaped in the opposite direction and did not witness the suspect being apprehended, emphasizing that the turmoil unfolded just steps away from where hundreds of prominent guests were gathered.
Safety of Key Officials Confirmed
The administration has confirmed that all key officials, including First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and various Cabinet members, are safe and accounted for. Following the incident, Trump took to Truth Social to announce, “Law Enforcement has requested that we leave the premises, consistent with protocol, which we will do, immediately. I will be giving a press conference in 30 minutes from the White House Press Briefing Room. The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members, are in perfect condition. We will be speaking to you in a half an hour. I have spoken with all the representatives in charge of the event, and we will be rescheduling within 30 days.”
The White House Correspondents’ Annual Dinner has been postponed and will be rescheduled. The suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California, and he is currently in custody.
