Winter Storm Warnings Across the Nation

A significant winter storm is set to impact a large portion of the United States this weekend and into the following week. Blizzard warnings, winter storm alerts, and avalanche risks are in effect from the Pacific Northwest to the Great Lakes region. The National Weather Service (NWS) advises residents in the most affected areas to refrain from traveling unless absolutely necessary.

Michigan Faces Heavy Snowfall

Currently, Michigan's Upper Peninsula is experiencing the most severe snowfall in the country. Winter storm warnings are in effect for counties such as Marquette, Baraga, Ontonagon, Houghton, Gogebic, Iron, and Alger, predicting accumulations of one to three feet of snow. Wind gusts may reach up to 60 mph along the lakeshore and Keweenaw Peninsula, with warnings extending through Tuesday morning. Travel conditions could become nearly impossible.

Blizzard Conditions in Minnesota and Wisconsin

Minnesota is bracing for a challenging weather situation, with winter storm warnings beginning Saturday afternoon, followed by blizzard warnings on Sunday morning. Snowfall rates could reach two to two and a half inches per hour on Saturday night, with northwest winds gusting to 50 or 55 mph on Sunday, creating whiteout conditions. Central Minnesota and western Wisconsin are expected to receive 12 to 18 inches of snow, with some areas nearing two feet. The Lake Superior snowbelt in Wisconsin may see 20 to 32 inches, with near-blizzard conditions anticipated late Sunday into Monday.

South Dakota Blizzard Warnings

Blizzard warnings are also in effect along the Minnesota-South Dakota border, covering Big Stone and Traverse counties in Minnesota, as well as Day, Marshall, and Roberts counties in South Dakota. Forecasts indicate snowfall of 10 to 19 inches, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph. Further west, Edmunds, McPherson, and Brown counties are expected to receive six to ten inches under similar wind conditions.

Avalanche Risks in the Rockies

In Montana's Absaroka/Beartooth and Crazy Mountains, additional snowfall of six to eighteen inches, combined with gusts up to 65 mph, is worsening backcountry conditions, increasing avalanche risks. The NWS is advising anyone venturing into the high country to be adequately prepared.

Safety Recommendations

The NWS recommends that individuals avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. If travel is unavoidable, it is crucial to carry a winter survival kit that includes food, water, and a flashlight. In the event of becoming stranded, it is advised to remain with your vehicle. Before heading out, check your state's 511 service for the latest road conditions.
