Tornado Warnings in Michigan


The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Kalamazoo County, Michigan, as severe weather continues to affect the Midwest. At 7:14 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of generating a tornado was detected near Portage, moving northeast at a speed of 55 mph. The storm's radar shows signs of rotation, indicating a significant tornado risk. Officials have cautioned that flying debris poses a serious threat to individuals without adequate shelter, and mobile homes may face destruction. Damage to roofs, windows, vehicles, and trees is also anticipated.


Areas such as Kalamazoo, Portage, Parchment, Comstock Northwest, and Westwood were expected to experience the storm around 7:20 PM EDT, with Richland and Gull Lake following shortly after at 7:30 PM EDT. Other communities at risk include Comstock, Augusta, Scotts, and Cooper. Residents have been advised to take immediate safety measures, such as relocating to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy structure and staying away from windows.


In addition to the tornado threat, heavy rainfall linked to the storm could result in flash flooding, prompting officials to warn against driving through flooded areas.


Similar severe weather alerts have been issued in nearby states. In southern Wisconsin, a tornado warning was in effect for Janesville, Milton, and Lake Koshkonong until 6:45 PM CDT. This warning, based on radar-detected rotation and potential pea-sized hail, affects parts of Rock and Jefferson counties, putting around 75,000 residents, 29 schools, and one hospital at risk during this severe weather event.


Further south, the National Weather Service in Lincoln, Illinois, has also issued a tornado warning for southeastern Knox County and northwestern Peoria County until 6:45 PM CDT. A storm near Maquon, moving northeast at 45 mph, poses a tornado threat to areas including Yates City, Elmwood, and Brimfield, impacting sections of Interstate 74.
