Tornado Touches Down Near South Pekin

A tornado was confirmed to have touched down close to South Pekin, Illinois, on Friday evening, leading to urgent alerts throughout central Illinois as the storm swiftly advanced through the area. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado was detected approximately 7 miles south of Pekin at around 8:22 PM CDT, moving northeast at a rapid speed of 60 mph.

The warning for central Tazewell and northeastern Mason counties is in effect until 8:45 PM CDT, with additional alerts for regions such as Peoria, East Peoria, and Morton lasting until 9:00 PM CDT. Officials have indicated that the storm presents a significant threat, with radar data showing a damaging tornado and the possibility of hail.

Areas in the tornado's trajectory include Tremont, Mackinaw, and communities like Dillon and Groveland. Major roadways, including parts of Interstate 155 and Interstate 74, are also anticipated to be affected as the storm continues its northeast path.

The National Weather Service cautioned that flying debris could pose a life-threatening risk for individuals without adequate shelter. Mobile homes are particularly vulnerable to destruction, and damage to roofs, windows, vehicles, and trees is expected.

Authorities recommend moving to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and avoiding windows.
