Severe Weather Alerts in Indiana

A significant portion of central and southern Indiana is currently under a severe thunderstorm warning as rapidly advancing storms threaten the area. These storms pose risks of damaging winds capable of uprooting trees and damaging roofs. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis has issued this warning for nine counties, which include Brown, Greene, Jackson, Johnson, Lawrence, Monroe, Morgan, Owen, and Putnam.

Factors Contributing to the Severe Weather

Weather experts are monitoring wind gusts that could reach up to 60 miles per hour with this storm system, which could inflict significant damage to homes and properties, especially to roofs, siding, and trees that are unable to withstand such force. The storms are advancing eastward at a speed of 45 miles per hour. At the time of the warning, the line of severe weather extended from approximately 11 miles northwest of Martinsville down to Bloomington. Communities in the storm's path include Bloomington, Martinsville, Mooresville, Spencer, and Nashville, among others.

Tornado Watch Issued

In addition to the thunderstorm warning, a tornado watch is in effect until midnight EDT, covering south central, central, southwestern, and west central Indiana. This watch encompasses a larger area than the thunderstorm warning, indicating a heightened risk for tornado formation across the region tonight. The NWS advises individuals in the watch and warning zones to seek shelter in interior rooms on the lowest floor of their homes and to avoid windows.
