San Antonio experienced intense rainfall on Monday afternoon, leading to significant flooding on Loop 1604 and the closure of at least ten roads throughout the city. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for the area, which is set to remain active until 5 p.m. Authorities have described the situation as 'dangerous and life-threatening,' urging residents to refrain from traveling unless they are fleeing floodwaters or have received an evacuation order.
Reports indicate that high water levels affected both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Loop 1604 near Hardy Oak Boulevard and U.S. 281. Traffic cameras captured images of water nearly reaching the windows of vehicles attempting to navigate through the flooded areas, resulting in significant traffic congestion as drivers slowed down.
The Texas Department of Transportation has confirmed the flooding on the highway. In the nearby Hollywood Park area, police have closed the 200 block of Yosemite Drive due to standing water and have set up barricades to prevent access.
The city has announced the closure of the following roads due to high water:
- Old Grissom Road (from Timber Path to Culebra Road)
- North Weidner Road (near Old O’Connor Road)
- Old O’Connor Road (from Lookout Road to Command Post)
- South Park Boulevard (from Gaynor Street to W. Baylor)
- Hollyhock Road (from Strathaven to Babcock Road)
- UTSA Boulevard (from Presidio Parkway to Oakview Cove)
- George Road (from Hunters Bow to Northwest Military Highway)
- Danville Drive (near Overbrook)
- Sleepy Hollow (from Sunburst Lane to Orsinger Lane)
Barricades have been erected at several of these locations. Authorities are strongly advising drivers: 'Turn around, don’t drown.' They also emphasized that driving around barricades is not only hazardous but also illegal. Motorists should anticipate delays and are encouraged to steer clear of low-lying areas and flooded roads.
