Washington, Apr 26: During the annual dinner for White House correspondents, US President Donald Trump and senior officials were safely evacuated following gunfire outside the venue. The incident occurred around 8:34 PM local time as dinner was being served.
Details of the Evacuation
At the time of the shooting, Trump was engaged in conversation with Weijia Jiang, the President of the White House Correspondents' Association, and mentalist Oz Pearlman, who was set to perform at the event held at the Washington Hilton.
Secret Service agents quickly shielded the President, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J D Vance, and Second Lady Usha Vance, escorting them out of the ballroom to safety.
Many attendees, including political leaders and journalists, instinctively took cover under tables as the situation unfolded.
Trump's Response and Aftermath
In a show of resilience, Trump later announced on Truth Social that the dinner would be rescheduled within a month. A C-SPAN reporter described the chaos, stating, “Boom, boom, boom, boom is all that I heard, and many guests ducked under the table.”
Following the incident, Trump held a press conference where he confirmed that security forces apprehended a suspect from California. He recounted hearing a loud noise, initially mistaking it for a tray falling, and noted that the attacker had not reached the area where they were seated.
Trump also mentioned that a security officer was shot at but survived due to wearing a bulletproof vest.
Protests and Public Reaction
Outside the hotel, several protesters voiced their opposition to the Trump administration and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
A CNN reporter present outside the ballroom witnessed the gunman firing just a short distance away, prompting many attendees to seek shelter as law enforcement responded swiftly.
The suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from California.
Trump's Perspective on Safety
When asked about the implications of the incident for his role as President, Trump acknowledged the dangers of his position but expressed confidence in managing the risks. “I like not to think about it. I lead a pretty normal life, considering, you know, it’s a dangerous life,” he stated.
Trump has previously survived two assassination attempts in the last two years, one during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and another in Palm Beach, Florida.
He emphasized the diverse political representation at the dinner, stating, “We had Republicans, Democrats, independents, conservatives, liberals, and progressives...everybody in that room, big crowd, record-setting crowd.”
In light of the evening's events, Trump urged all Americans to commit to resolving differences peacefully.
