Russian Military Official Killed in Car Bombing Near Moscow
Incident Overview
On June 9, a car bombing in Balashikha, located approximately 10 kilometers east of Moscow, resulted in the death of a Russian military official, as reported by both Russian authorities and independent media sources. The explosion occurred around 5:30 AM local time, targeting a BMW X3 near a residential building. The Investigative Committee of Russia confirmed that the driver sustained severe injuries and succumbed to them at the scene.
Initially, the identity of the deceased was not disclosed, but later investigations by the independent outlet The Insider revealed that the victim was Damir Davydov, a senior official in Russia's Main Missile and Artillery Directorate (GRAU), responsible for the supply of missile and artillery ammunition to Russian forces.
Speculations and Investigations
Prior to the identification of Davydov, there were speculations on Russian Telegram channels suggesting that Colonel General Alexander Maksimtsev, the chief of staff and first deputy commander of Russia's Aerospace Forces, might have been the target. However, subsequent reports confirmed Davydov's involvement.
The bombing occurred on Koldunova Street in a district originally established for military personnel and their families. Witnesses reported hearing emergency responders mention the name "Damir" at the scene, and records indicated that Davydov had previously resided on that street.
According to the Telegram channel 112, the explosive device was concealed beneath the driver's seat and had an explosive power equivalent to 300 to 400 grams of TNT. Forensic experts and investigators have been dispatched to the site to conduct medical and explosives examinations as part of the ongoing inquiry. As of now, no suspects or motives have been publicly disclosed by Russian authorities.
Context of the Attack
This incident marks the latest in a series of attacks targeting Russian military personnel since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In December 2025, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was killed by an explosive device in southern Moscow, with Russian investigators attributing the attack to Ukrainian intelligence services.
Additionally, in the previous year, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov and his aide, Ilya Polikarpov, lost their lives when a bomb attached to an electric scooter detonated outside an apartment building in southeastern Moscow, an act claimed by Ukraine's Security Service. Notably, the recent bombing occurred less than a kilometer from where Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a similar attack in April 2025.
As of the latest updates, Ukrainian officials have not commented on the Balashikha bombing, and no evidence has surfaced to connect Kyiv to this incident.
