Drone Attack on Volgograd Foiled
Moscow, Aug 4: Russian air defense units successfully countered a significant drone assault aimed at the transport and energy infrastructure in the Volgograd region overnight, as reported by local officials on Monday.
Governor Andrey Bocharov of Volgograd confirmed via social media that there were no reported injuries from the incident.
According to Bocharov, debris from the intercepted drones caused damage to a high-voltage power line, leading to power outages in Ilovlya and surrounding areas. Emergency teams have been deployed to restore electricity.
In Frolovo, a fire broke out at a technical facility within the Archeda railway station, resulting in temporary train service suspensions while explosive ordnance disposal teams dealt with an unexploded drone that had landed on the tracks, as reported by a news agency.
Six trains, including long-distance services to Moscow and St. Petersburg, experienced delays due to this incident, confirmed by the Privolzhskaya branch of Russian Railways.
On the previous day, Russian air defense forces reported the destruction and interception of 41 Ukrainian drones across various regions in under four hours.
The drones were taken down by active air defense systems between 8 p.m. and 11:25 p.m. Moscow time, according to official statements.
Last Thursday, Russia accused Ukraine of intentionally targeting civilians, claiming that seven individuals were killed and over 120 injured, including 11 minors, due to shelling and UAV attacks in the past week.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova detailed incidents from July 16, including a drone strike on a private residence in Smorodino that resulted in a fatality, and an attack on a combine harvester in Novostroevka-Pervaya that injured the driver. She also mentioned injuries from drone strikes in Pritsepilovka and Novaya Tavolzhanka.
Zakharova further noted that between July 17 and 22, drones targeted five civilian vehicles, leading to one death and six injuries. Additional incidents included injuries from shelling and UAV attacks in Shebekino and Togobiyevka, as well as the destruction of a residential building in Ilek-Penkovka, injuring a woman and two teenagers.
She emphasized that the Ukrainian armed forces continue to target unarmed Russian civilians engaged in their daily lives.
