Russia Issues Warning of Renewed Strikes on Kyiv Amid Ongoing Conflict
Escalation of Attacks on Kyiv
In a recent development, Russia has threatened to initiate a new series of 'systematic strikes' against Kyiv, shortly after executing one of the most extensive aerial bombardments on the Ukrainian capital since the onset of the conflict. The Russian foreign ministry announced that future assaults would focus on 'decision-making centers and command posts' as well as drone production facilities located in Kyiv. Additionally, Moscow has advised foreign nationals and diplomats to evacuate the city 'as soon as possible' and cautioned residents to avoid administrative and military sites.
This warning came in the wake of significant Russian attacks on Saturday night, which resulted in four fatalities and approximately 100 injuries in Kyiv and surrounding areas, as reported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Russia justified its strikes as a response to what it termed a deliberate Ukrainian attack on a student dormitory in Starobilsk, a town in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine, where officials claimed 21 individuals lost their lives. Ukraine, however, refuted these claims, asserting that its military targeted a prominent Russian drone unit in the vicinity.
Intense Missile and Drone Assault on Kyiv
Kyiv experienced one of the most severe aerial assaults of the war on Saturday night, with Russia launching a barrage of ballistic and cruise missiles, accompanied by hundreds of drones. Moscow also deployed a hypersonic, nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile aimed at the Bila Tserkva area, situated approximately 90 kilometers south of Kyiv. Online videos captured the city skyline illuminated by explosions throughout the night, with blasts impacting residential areas and civilian infrastructure.
Numerous non-military locations sustained damage or destruction, including the Chernobyl Museum, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, a shopping center, a market, and residential buildings in the Lukanivka district. Furthermore, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reportedly urged US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to facilitate the evacuation of American diplomats from Kyiv during a phone conversation on Monday, as per the Russian foreign ministry's statement.
Despite the ongoing assaults since Russia's invasion in 2022, Ukraine has established multi-layered air defense systems capable of intercepting many incoming missiles and drones. Nevertheless, officials caution that the overwhelming scale of Russian attacks can surpass these defenses, increasing Kyiv's dependence on foreign-supplied air defense systems.
