Rocket Assault on Baghdad Airport

On Sunday, a series of rocket strikes targeted the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport, resulting in injuries to five individuals, including airport personnel and security staff, as reported by Iraqi officials. The security media cell of Iraq disclosed that "five rockets were launched at Baghdad International Airport and its nearby areas, injuring four airport workers and a security engineer." The report further indicated that some rockets impacted the airport and a water desalination facility, while others landed close to a prison housing individuals associated with the Islamic State and near an Iraqi airbase adjacent to a US diplomatic site.

This attack followed a previous incident involving the US Embassy in Baghdad, where security sources indicated that the embassy compound was targeted on Saturday after earlier strikes in the city resulted in the deaths of three members of a significant Iran-aligned militia.

Witnesses reported seeing a plume of black smoke rising from the embassy complex shortly after the explosions on Saturday morning. Two security officials informed that the embassy had been struck by a drone. The US embassy has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the incident. Additionally, on Saturday, security sources mentioned that another drone attack aimed at the Baghdad airport complex, which encompasses a military base and a US diplomatic facility, was thwarted, although a crashed drone ignited a significant fire outside the area.

These events occur amidst escalating tensions in the region, particularly following US and Israeli military actions against Iran on February 28, which have intensified conflicts throughout the Middle East. Iraq, having long been a battleground for proxy conflicts between the US and Iran, is increasingly embroiled in the violence. Numerous Iran-backed militias operating within Iraq have intensified their assaults on American interests, with these groups, labeled as terrorist organizations by Washington, conducting frequent rocket and drone strikes on US bases in Iraq and other locations in the region.
