Resignations Spark Pressure on Keir Starmer Amid Labour Party Turmoil
Growing Discontent Within the Labour Party
Two aides to ministers have stepped down in response to the leadership of Keir Starmer, as increasing numbers within the Labour Party are urging the UK Prime Minister to resign immediately or provide a timeline for his exit. Currently, 60 Labour MPs have publicly called for Starmer's resignation. Joe Morris, who served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Health Secretary Wes Streeting, expressed that the Prime Minister has lost the public's trust and confidence. Similarly, Tom Rutland resigned from his position as PPS to Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds, stating that Starmer is unable to tackle the political challenges posed by Reform UK.
Additionally, Sally Jameson, PPS to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, has joined the chorus of voices demanding that Starmer clarify his plans for stepping down. This wave of pressure follows disappointing election outcomes for Labour, which saw a loss of nearly 1,500 councillors in England, significant setbacks against Reform UK and the Greens, a century-long dominance in Wales come to an end, and only 17 seats secured in the Scottish Parliament, marking its worst performance at Holyrood.
In a recent address, Starmer maintained that he would not resign, asserting his intention to prove the skeptics wrong. He acknowledged that the government had made errors but contended that it had made the right major political decisions. Morris remarked that Labour councillors and candidates were unfairly blamed for decisions beyond their control, noting that voters no longer trust Starmer to bring about the change they desire. Rutland highlighted the evident hostility towards the Prime Minister from voters, claiming that Starmer has lost credibility both within the Parliamentary Labour Party and among the electorate.
