Real Madrid Commemorates Flood Victims

In a heartfelt gesture, football clubs Real Madrid and Malaga held a minute of silence prior to their La Liga match at Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, honoring the victims of the catastrophic floods that have impacted Nepal and Tibet.

Demonstrating their support for those affected, Real Madrid's social media team shared on X, "A minute of silence at the Bernabeu, in memory of the victims of the terrible flooding that has struck the border between Nepal and Tibet." Additionally, players donned black armbands to signify their respect for the deceased.

Nepal Faces Rising Death Toll

This tribute coincided with Nepal's ongoing struggle to recover from severe flash floods, with the Nepal Police reporting a total of 788 bodies recovered by 3 PM on Sunday. The highest fatalities were recorded in Chitwan with 264 deaths, followed by Nawalparasi East (194), Nawalparasi West (120), Gorkha (58), Nuwakot (52), Dhading (50), Tanahun (37), and Rasuwa (13).

Details on Missing Persons

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Authority (NDRRMA), as of 1 PM, 2,502 individuals are still unaccounted for as rescue efforts persist in various affected regions. Unidentified bodies are currently being stored in 21 hospitals across the country while identification processes are underway. Among the missing, 933 are workers from local hydropower projects, 592 are foreign nationals, and 127 are Nepali citizens traveling with foreign groups. Reports also include personnel from the Nepal Police, Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Customs Office, and Immigration Office.

Extensive Rescue and Relief Efforts in Progress

Authorities have reported that 239 injured individuals are receiving medical attention or have been discharged, aided by six surgical teams deployed to the disaster area.

Nearly 20,000 security personnel have been mobilized, resulting in 8,730 rescues by ground teams. Air operations have conducted 363 helicopter flights, successfully airlifting 3,081 individuals, including 236 foreigners, and rescuing 279 people directly from a flooded hydropower tunnel in recent days.

In a further update, NDRRMA confirmed that 260 men and 223 women have been rescued, along with 22 foreign nationals.

The Government of Nepal has also initiated emergency cash support, allocating NPR 10 million each to Rasuwa and Nuwakot, NPR 5 million to Dhading, and NPR 67.5 million to 15 local governments. Relief operations have dispatched 50 transport vehicles and conducted eight helicopter flights carrying food, communication equipment, and emergency supplies to isolated communities like Uttargaya and Dhunche. Fuel reserves are being actively managed to ensure ongoing air and land operations, with relief materials being sent from Kathmandu to the flood-affected regions.
