Rare Case of Baby Born with Three Genitals in Iraq

In a remarkable incident, a baby was born in Iraq with three genitals, leaving doctors astonished. This is reportedly the first case they have encountered where a newborn has more than one private part. Typically, variations in the number of fingers or toes can occur, but this situation with genitals is unprecedented.

The baby was delivered near Mosul in northern Iraq. Medical professionals describe this occurrence as nothing short of miraculous. Among the three genitals, one measures 2 cm in length, while another is 1 cm long, both distinct from the primary genitalia. Such anomalies are not considered normal and do not function in any physiological capacity.

Doctors have indicated that they plan to surgically remove the two additional genitals. This type of condition can arise due to complications during pregnancy or may be linked to genetic factors within the family.

While the birth of a baby with three genitals is indeed rare, it is not entirely unprecedented. Such cases are referred to as supernumerary penises, occurring in approximately 1 in 5 to 6 million births worldwide. To date, there have been around 100 documented instances of babies born with two genitals, but this is the first known case of a baby with three.

This unique case has been termed triphallia by scientists and has been published in an international case study in the International Journal of Surgery. Notably, a similar case was reported in India in 2015, although there was insufficient medical evidence at that time.
