Rahul Gandhi Predicts Modi Will Yield to Trump’s Tariff Deadline
Gandhi's Concerns Over Trade Negotiations
With only three days remaining until the implementation of reciprocal tariffs by Donald Trump, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will likely concede to the deadline amidst ongoing trade agreement stalemates. This statement followed comments from Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who emphasized that India would only engage in a trade deal with the U.S. if its interests are safeguarded. Sources had previously indicated that a preliminary trade agreement between India and the U.S. could be signed before the July 9 deadline.
Gandhi's Bold Statement
On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi reacted to a remark made by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, claiming that Prime Minister Modi would easily bow to the tariff deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump. Goyal had stated on Friday that India does not operate under deadlines for trade agreements and would only accept a deal with the U.S. once it is fully finalized and beneficial for the nation.
Trade Negotiations Under Pressure
In a post on social media, Gandhi remarked, "Piyush Goyal can boast as much as he wants, but mark my words, Modi will submit to Trump’s tariff deadline." On April 2, President Trump imposed an additional 26% tariff on products imported from India, which was later postponed for 90 days until July 9. Meanwhile, the original 10% tariff imposed by the U.S. remains in effect. Both nations are currently striving to finalize an interim trade agreement before the impending deadline, with multiple rounds of discussions held at various levels.
India's Demands in Trade Talks
India is seeking greater access to U.S. labor-intensive industries, including textiles, gems and jewelry, leather goods, and chemicals. Despite the extended stay of India's negotiation team led by Special Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal in Washington, these issues remain unresolved. During a business event in Delhi, Goyal reiterated that India would not compromise on the interests of its agricultural and dairy sectors.
Goyal's Stance on Trade Agreements
Goyal emphasized, "India never enters trade agreements based on deadlines or time pressure. It must be a win-win situation for both parties, and only if India's interests are protected will we engage. If a favorable deal is reached, India is always ready to collaborate with developed nations."
