Putin's Diplomatic Push: Can Russia Help Ease Gulf Tensions?
Moscow's Efforts to Mitigate Gulf Crisis
Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin is actively working to reduce tensions in the Gulf region, maintaining close communication with local leaders amid Iran's significant retaliatory actions against U.S. facilities, as reported by the Kremlin on Tuesday.
Following the joint U.S. and Israeli strikes that resulted in the death of 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several family members, Iran has launched attacks on various U.S. military bases in neighboring Gulf nations.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, “Putin is committed to facilitating a reduction in tensions. We engaged in discussions with nearly all our contacts yesterday.”
He further noted that through ongoing dialogue with Iranian officials, President Putin intends to express his serious concerns regarding the attacks on Iranian infrastructure.
The Kremlin disclosed that Putin has held telephone conversations with leaders from Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.
During a call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Putin addressed the escalating situation stemming from U.S.-Israeli military actions against Iran.
Both leaders expressed deep concerns about the potential for conflict escalation, which has already impacted several Arab nations and poses severe risks. Putin emphasized the urgent need for a political and diplomatic resolution to this precarious situation.
Putin also communicated with King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar, and President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the UAE.
The discussions highlighted the unprecedented escalation surrounding Iran due to U.S. and Israeli aggression, which threatens to plunge the region into a full-scale war with unpredictable outcomes. The parties stressed the importance of quickly halting hostilities to prevent further deterioration and to restore a diplomatic approach.
These developments pose significant security threats to numerous Arab nations that maintain friendly ties with Russia.
In light of this, President Putin reiterated Russia's willingness to utilize all available resources to help stabilize the regional situation, with ongoing communications with Gulf leaders expected.
