Lisbon, Aug 5: The Prime Minister of Portugal, Luis Montenegro, has articulated his support for the nation's migration strategy, describing it as a model for regulated reception and integration. He contrasted this with what he termed the "unregulated migration flows" observed in other regions.
As reported by Lusa News Agency, Montenegro emphasized that Portugal is dedicated to ensuring that migrants can live with dignity, providing them access to essential services such as employment, housing, healthcare, education, and mobility.
He pointed out that nations with attractive migration policies often draw migrants without offering adequate conditions for their integration and reception, according to Xinhua News Agency.
These comments followed an urgent video conference among European Union (EU) interior ministers regarding the surge of migrants into Ceuta, a Spanish territory in North Africa. During the meeting, EU ministers concurred on the need for enhanced border security and improved migrant return protocols.
Spain's interior ministry reported that approximately 72,000 individuals entered Ceuta irregularly within a single day last week, with around 70,000 having since returned to Morocco.
On July 31, the Portuguese government expressed its deep concern over the migration situation in Ceuta and reiterated its commitment to strict border control as vital for maintaining the integrity of the Schengen area.
In a statement from the office of Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, the government extended condolences for the lives lost during the crisis and noted that it has been kept updated by the Spanish government since the onset of the situation.
"The Portuguese government reaffirms that the integrity of the Schengen system relies on stringent border controls and a resolute approach to combat all forms of illegal immigration," the statement indicated.
Portuguese authorities have maintained communication with both the Spanish and Moroccan governments, with security forces, including the GNR gendarmerie and Maritime Police, collaborating with their Spanish counterparts.
Spain has assured that, in close cooperation with Moroccan authorities, it will work to reverse the flow of thousands of migrants that has escalated in recent weeks, particularly over the last two days.
