Pakistan Appoints Field Marshal Asim Munir to Tackle Population Growth
New Initiative to Address Population Challenges
Pakistan is set to assign a significant new role to Field Marshal Asim Munir, tasking him with addressing the country's escalating population issues. The government is optimistic that Munir can contribute to efforts aimed at reducing the population growth rate, which has proven challenging to manage over the past three years. This announcement was made by Syed Mustafa Kamal, the Federal Health Minister, during a joint session of the Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services and the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights, as reported by local media.
The meeting, led by Senators Amir Waliuddin Chishti and Samina Mumtaz Zehri, focused on the urgent need for coordinated policy reforms to tackle the growing population. A post from the Senate of Pakistan on social media highlighted the importance of establishing a permanent legal framework for effective population management.
Currently, Pakistan ranks as the fourth most populous nation globally and is projected to maintain this position by 2030, overtaking Indonesia. The population of Pakistan is estimated at around 259 million, while Indonesia's stands at approximately 288 million.
During the discussions, Minister Kamal revealed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed a high-level committee dedicated to population management, which includes Field Marshal Munir. He emphasized that the government is prioritizing this issue and making crucial policy decisions at all levels. Kamal also noted that collaboration between the government and the public is essential to effectively manage population growth. If the current trend continues, Pakistan may soon surpass Indonesia in population size.
