Dhaka, Oct 29: In a troubling trend of violence against minorities in Bangladesh, a Hindu man was reportedly murdered, and three homes belonging to Hindu families were vandalized and looted, according to local news sources.

The victim, identified as 43-year-old Rabendra Rishi, who operated a salon, was allegedly killed by a man named Saddam after he refused to provide a haircut on credit in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh district on Tuesday evening.

As reported by the Bangladeshi daily Prothom Alo, the 26-year-old assailant stabbed Rabendra in the chest and neck with a knife, resulting in his immediate death.

Witness accounts indicate that Saddam entered Rabendra's salon armed with a knife and attacked him. In a desperate attempt to escape, Rabendra fled to a nearby shop owned by Saddam's father, but the attacker pursued him and continued to stab him.

Rabendra sought refuge in a nearby courtyard, but Saddam allegedly overpowered him and continued the assault, leading to his death from severe blood loss.

Rabendra's wife, Suchitra, claimed that Saddam often extorted money from her husband for drugs and frequently refused to pay for his haircuts. She stated that their disputes often escalated when Rabendra demanded payment, and she believes that his refusal to provide another haircut on credit ultimately led to his murder. She also mentioned that Saddam had threatened her husband multiple times, including a chilling warning before Durga Puja.

After Saddam's arrest, Mohammad Zahidul Islam, the officer-in-charge of Bhaluka Model Police Station, noted that the suspect was acting erratically. A five-day remand for interrogation has been requested, and the victim's body has been returned to his family following an autopsy.

In a separate incident, three Hindu homes were vandalized and looted in Chak Karimpur village, Pirganj upazila, on Monday night. This attack reportedly followed a social media post that allegedly offended the religious sentiments of Muslims, as per police reports.

The homes belonged to three brothers: Bishu Chandra Mohanta, 50, Jagadish Chandra Mohanta, 60, and Dinesh Chandra Mohanta, 46. Bishu reported that the attackers damaged his television and furniture, and stole two goats from his property.

Jagadish and Dinesh also reported extensive damage to their homes, including broken doors and stolen valuables. Jagadish's wife, Arati Rani, recounted her fear during the attack, stating that she fled to protect herself while pleading with the attackers to stop.

In response to the violence against Hindu families in Rangpur, the Awami League condemned the attacks, highlighting the ongoing insecurity faced by minority communities in Bangladesh since August 2024. They emphasized that allegations of religious insults should never justify mob violence or collective punishment, asserting that every accused individual deserves due process and every victim equal protection under the law.
