Pakistan Considers Smart Lockdown Amid Oil Crisis
Government's Response to Oil Crisis
In light of the ongoing global oil crisis, the Pakistani government is contemplating the implementation of a "smart lockdown" as a strategy to address the situation. A report from a local news outlet indicates that this measure is being considered as part of significant austerity efforts. Although a plan for the smart lockdown has been drafted, it still requires approval from provincial governments.
There have been various claims circulating on social media suggesting that Pakistan might soon enforce a complete lockdown on weekends. However, the Ministry of Information has dismissed these rumors as false.
According to the same news source, President Asif Ali Zardari convened a crucial meeting on Monday at 4 PM to discuss the proposal with provincial leaders and other key officials, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir.
Officials have stated that the plan remains under consideration and will be thoroughly reviewed during this meeting. A draft of the proposal has been shared on social media, but authorities have confirmed that it is not yet finalized.
If the proposal is approved, this would mark Pakistan's second implementation of a "smart lockdown," similar to the one enacted during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020-21. The draft plan outlines the following measures:
- Lockdowns may be enforced every Saturday and Sunday starting from April 4 or 5.
- All businesses, markets, industries, and services will be closed on these days.
- Public gatherings, including weddings, will be prohibited.
However, essential services such as hospitals, pharmacies, airports, seaports, and railway stations will remain operational. While highways and motorways may be restricted for most vehicles, public transport buses will still be permitted to operate.
The plan also emphasizes the need for state officials to expedite the registration of two- and three-wheelers to facilitate targeted subsidies. Additionally, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to meet with President Zardari to further discuss the proposal before a final decision is made.
