Ongoing Search for Missing Arizona Woman: New Developments in Nancy Guthrie Case
Disappearance of Nancy Guthrie
It has been 57 days since Nancy Guthrie, an 84-year-old resident of Tucson, Arizona, went missing. She was last seen on January 31 and was reported missing the next day after she did not show up for church. Authorities suspect she may have been forcibly taken from her home. A body found in a Scottsdale canal has been ruled out as connected to her case. The FBI has retrieved additional footage from cameras located on Guthrie’s property, but these images have not revealed anything suspicious, and officials do not plan to make them public. Furthermore, DNA found on a glove located over two miles from her residence has been linked to a local restaurant worker and is not related to the investigation. Other items are still being analyzed. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has ceased the use of cadaver dogs in the search but can deploy them again if necessary.
Sheriff Chris Nanos indicated that investigators suspect events leading to Ms. Guthrie's disappearance may have occurred weeks prior, raising concerns about a potential ongoing threat to the community. In a statement from March 21, the Guthrie family urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that even minor details could be crucial. They are seeking any relevant footage, messages, or observations that might aid the investigation. The sheriff’s department has also cautioned the public about possible fundraising scams related to the case, clarifying that there is no official GoFundMe or fundraising initiative associated with the investigation.
On April 6, Savannah Guthrie is set to return to NBC’s "Today" show, as announced by the network. In a conversation with Hoda Kotb, she recounted the moment her family realized her mother was missing. "She said, she’s gone," Guthrie recalled her sister's frantic call. "We were both in a panic. I told her to call 911, and she said they were already there." Initially, the family speculated that her mother might have experienced a medical emergency, noting that the back doors were found propped open, which seemed unusual. Guthrie expressed that her family is enduring immense distress as the search continues. "It’s hard to imagine returning to that place of joy and lightness, but I feel I must come back because it’s about my family. It feels like part of my purpose right now," she stated.
Authorities have been conducting door-to-door inquiries in the area and are actively analyzing evidence. Residents living within a two-mile radius of Guthrie’s home have been asked to check their surveillance footage from January 1 to February 2 for any unusual activity. Reports have surfaced regarding a ransom demand sent to a media outlet, which has since been forwarded to the FBI. Despite extensive searches and increasing national attention, no suspects have been identified, and no significant breakthroughs have been reported.
