New US Sanctions Target Iranian Officials Amid Ongoing Protests
US Takes Action Against Iranian Officials
The United States has announced new sanctions targeting Iranian officials accused of suppressing protests against the country's theocratic regime. This action was taken by the Treasury Department on Thursday, focusing on the secretary of the Supreme Council for National Security, who allegedly incited violence against demonstrators. Additionally, the sanctions extend to 18 individuals and entities linked to a clandestine banking network associated with Iranian financial institutions.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that the US stands with the Iranian populace in their pursuit of freedom and justice. While these sanctions restrict access to US assets and business opportunities, they are largely symbolic, as many of the individuals targeted do not possess US financial resources.
