Backlash Over Historical Reference

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sparked controversy after referencing historian Will Durant during a recent press conference. He stated, “Jesus Christ has no advantage over Genghis Khan,” while discussing the justification for military actions taken by the US and Israel against Iran. This statement was made on March 19 amidst the ongoing conflict in the region.

Netanyahu emphasized that in the current global landscape, mere morality is insufficient. Citing Durant’s work, The Lessons of History, he argued that history illustrates how strength and power often dictate outcomes. He remarked, “If you are strong enough, ruthless enough, powerful enough, evil will overcome good. Aggression will overcome moderation,” framing his comments as a call for democracies to demonstrate their strength.

He further asserted that countries like Israel and the United States must take decisive action to protect themselves from escalating threats. “We have to be strong. We have to be armed. We have to be more powerful than the barbarians, or they will not be merely at the gate; they’ll crash our gates and destroy our societies,” he stated, linking the ongoing military efforts to this necessity.

However, his reference to Jesus Christ and Genghis Khan quickly gained traction online, leading to significant backlash. Many critics interpreted his comments as anti-Christian, resulting in a wave of negative reactions on social media. Netanyahu's statement seemed to echo a sentiment he expressed in a 2019 interview, where he summarized Durant’s argument rather than offering his personal opinion. Nevertheless, the phrasing has drawn sharp criticism, with opponents accusing him of insensitivity during a time of conflict.
