Moscow Faces Increased Drone Attacks as Ukrainian Strikes Intensify
Overview of Recent Drone Attacks in Moscow
The mayor of Moscow has reported that numerous Ukrainian drones were intercepted during a nighttime assault on the Russian capital, marking the ninth consecutive day of such attacks. Sergey Sobyanin stated that air defense systems successfully shot down at least 60 drones, responding to what he characterized as a persistent aerial offensive against Moscow. He noted that one drone caused damage to a facility at the Moscow Oil Refinery, but fortunately, there were no reported injuries. Sobyanin communicated updates via Telegram, indicating that emergency services were deployed to the incident site.
Damage Reported at Oil Refinery
Reports from Moscow indicated that a Gazprom-owned refinery in the Kapotnya district suffered damage, with social media footage showing flames and thick smoke billowing from the area, although this footage has not been independently verified. Regional authorities later confirmed that a total of 86 drones were intercepted throughout the broader region, with at least six individuals sustaining injuries.

Escalation of Drone Warfare
According to official reports, the recent drone activity on Tuesday marked the ninth consecutive day of Ukrainian drone operations targeting Moscow. The mayor highlighted that the number of drones intercepted this year has already exceeded previous annual figures, indicating a significant rise in aerial assaults. Officials noted that this latest wave of attacks is among the largest since mid-May.
Ukrainian officials have increasingly framed these strikes as part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at targeting Russian infrastructure through long-range capabilities. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared footage that appeared to show the damaged refinery, asserting that it exemplifies Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities and serves as a response to ongoing Russian military actions. Zelenskyy emphasized that these long-range weapons are crucial for exerting pressure on Moscow.
Russia's Defense Response
In response, Russia's Defense Ministry reported that it had downed at least 172 Ukrainian drones overnight across various regions. This led to air traffic disruptions at several airports, including all four major airports in Moscow, as temporary flight restrictions were enacted. Meanwhile, Ukraine's air force reported ongoing Russian drone and missile attacks overnight, with most incoming threats being intercepted. However, some strikes still affected multiple locations.
The situation continues to escalate as both sides ramp up their long-range drone operations, resulting in increasing disruptions across major cities and critical infrastructure on both sides of the conflict.
