Memphis Grizzlies Forward Brandon Clarke Passes Away at 29
Tragic Loss of Brandon Clarke
Brandon Clarke, a power forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, has tragically passed away at the young age of 29, as confirmed by his agency and the team. Originally from Vancouver, Clarke was drafted 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder but was traded to Memphis on the same night. Over his seven seasons in the NBA, he participated in 309 games, averaging 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He earned a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Team during his first season.
Reports indicate that his death is under investigation as a potential overdose, although officials have yet to confirm the cause. Clarke's last season was marred by a serious calf injury sustained in March, limiting him to just two games this year. Prior to his NBA career, he played college basketball at San Jose State University before transferring to Gonzaga University in 2017. After a year of sitting out due to transfer regulations, he played a pivotal role in leading Gonzaga to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament, averaging 16.9 points per game and receiving All-American honors from both the Associated Press and Sporting News.
In a troubling incident last month, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas for allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase. He faced charges for possession and trafficking of a controlled substance, as well as fleeing from law enforcement, with the case still open at the time of his death.
His agency, Priority Sports, expressed their profound sorrow, stating, "We are all beyond devastated by the passing of Brandon Clarke. He was so loved by all of us here, and everyone whose life he touched. He was the gentlest soul who was the first to be there for all of his friends and family." They further noted, "Our hearts are so broken as we think about his mom, Whitney, his entire family, and all of his friends and teammates." The agency emphasized that Clarke had a significant impact on everyone he encountered throughout his life, from high school to his NBA journey.
The Memphis Grizzlies also shared their condolences on social media, expressing their heartbreak over Clarke's loss. They described him as an exceptional teammate and an even better person, whose contributions to the organization and the Memphis community will be remembered. The team extended their sympathies to his family and loved ones during this challenging time.
