Meet Rini Sampath: The First South Asian Candidate for Washington DC Mayor
Rini Sampath Makes History in DC Mayoral Race
Washington: Rini Sampath, originally from Tamil Nadu, has made history by becoming the first South Asian candidate to appear on the ballot for the Washington DC mayoral primary.
At just 31 years old, this Democratic Party member, who works as a government contractor, is running her campaign under the slogan 'Fix the Basics' with a vision for a revitalized DC.
Sampath emphasizes her outsider status, stating, 'I’m not a politician. I don’t owe any special interest groups. It’s time for someone focused on improving our essential city services.'
Having moved to the US at the age of seven, she has lived in Washington DC for over ten years.
Sampath expressed confidence in her campaign's momentum, noting, 'In just four weeks, we secured a spot on the mayoral ballot as the first South Asian candidate in DC history. Imagine what we could achieve with more resources to connect with every voter in the city.'
Washington DC has a long-standing Democratic majority, with no Republican mayors since the elections began in 1975. Prior to that, the city was governed by a Board of Commissioners appointed by the President of the United States.
The governance structure includes a popularly elected mayor and a 13-member district council.
As a potential mayor, Sampath aims to fulfill the city's commitments to its residents, focusing on issues like pothole repairs, addressing wastewater spills in the Potomac, reducing costs, and improving emergency response times.
The primary election is set for June 16, with the general election following on November 3.
Other candidates in the mayoral race include Janeese Lewis George, Kenyan McDuffie, Gary Goodweather, Robert L Gross, and Rhonda Hamilton.
