Mason Crane Makes International Comeback in ODI Tri-Series in Pakistan
Mason Crane's Unexpected Recall
Mason Crane, the England leg-spinner, expressed surprise at his selection for the upcoming ODI tri-series in Pakistan, marking his return to the national team after nearly nine years. This news was reported on the ICC website.
At 29 years old, Crane had previously played three international matches as a young player in 2017 and early 2018. He admitted that he had started to lose hope for another chance until he reignited his passion for the game in recent years. "Honestly, I didn't see this coming. It was quite unexpected. But I'm thrilled and excited. A few years back, I thought I might not get another opportunity, and I was putting too much pressure on myself, which made it less enjoyable," he shared during an interview on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast. He added, "However, over the last couple of years, I've regained that spark and ambition."
Crane's Last International Appearance
Crane's previous international outing was during the final Test of the 2017-18 Ashes series in Sydney, where he took the wicket of Usman Khawaja, who had scored 171 runs, as Australia clinched the series 4-0. He also played in two T20 Internationals against South Africa, where he managed to dismiss the legendary AB de Villiers.
Domestic Performance Fuels Recall
In 2026, Crane has showcased impressive form in England's domestic cricket, claiming 34 wickets across 14 County Championship matches and an additional 15 wickets in 10 Vitality Blast games, bolstering his case for a return to international cricket.
Improving Skills as a Leg-Spinner
Crane emphasized his focus on enhancing his consistency and variations as a leg-spinner. He aims to adapt to match situations and strategize on how to dismiss specific batters rather than relying solely on occasional exceptional deliveries. "I don't want to be known just for a few highlight-reel moments. I take pride in playing according to the situation, figuring out how to maximize my effectiveness on the pitch and dismiss particular players. I've also allowed myself more freedom with the ball now, trying out more variations and executing them better. It's crucial to add as many skills as possible to my repertoire," he explained.
