The UKMTO advisory indicated that the incident took place approximately eight nautical miles northeast of Limah, Oman, where the tanker sent out an emergency signal via VHF Channel 16, indicating it had been struck. Fire Erupts and Crew Evacuates
The tanker involved has been identified as the Kavomaleas (IMO 1042823), a Panamax/LR1-class oil products vessel. Initial reports suggest that the ship was either empty or en route to loading facilities in the Persian Gulf at the time of the incident. Following the projectile strike, a fire broke out, reportedly starting in or near the engine room. The captain promptly activated the onboard fire suppression systems and ordered the crew to abandon the ship as a safety measure.
Successful Rescue Operations by Omani Authorities
Reports indicate that all crew members were successfully rescued by Omani authorities and brought to safety on land. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities, and there are no immediate signs of a significant oil spill or environmental harm. UKMTO characterized the incident as involving an 'unknown projectile' and has urged vessels in the vicinity to exercise increased caution and report any suspicious activities to local maritime authorities.
