The Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) celebrated their first Major League Cricket (MLC) championship after a nail-biting one-run win against Washington Freedom in the final. This victory marks the 10th trophy for Knight Riders Sports in their global cricket endeavors.

As stated in a press release from LAKR, this triumph signifies a remarkable achievement for Knight Riders Sports, which has seen a franchise win a major title each year for the past three years: IPL 2024, CPL 2025, and now MLC 2026.

For veterans Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, this victory is a remarkable personal achievement, as they have now been part of three consecutive championship-winning seasons for the franchise. Narine, who earned the title of Most Valuable Player for the 2026 MLC season, played a crucial role in the final, taking three wickets during the powerplay with impressive figures of 3/13.

Thrilling Conclusion to the Championship

The championship victory fulfilled the aspirations set by LAKR captain Jason Holder at the season's outset, who stated, "We want to win the trophy. Anything less would be disappointing." LAKR achieved this goal in a dramatic manner.

Batting first in the final, LAKR scored 164 runs, with contributions from Andre Fletcher (47), Colin Munro (40), and Tromp (39). Narine (3/13) and Holder (3/31) were instrumental with the ball.

In a tense final over, Washington Freedom needed 14 runs. Shadley van Schalkwyk maintained his composure, dismissing Obus Pienaar and Ian Holland after conceding a six on the first ball, allowing only two singles in the last two deliveries. A run-out on the final ball while attempting a second run sealed a memorable one-run victory for LAKR.
