Kolkata Knight Riders Launch 'Runs to Roots' Initiative for IPL 2026
Kolkata Knight Riders Kick Off Environmental Initiative
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) three times, have launched the 2026 edition of their prominent environmental initiative, 'Runs to Roots'. This event commenced with a tree plantation drive at Subhas Sarovar Lake Park in Kolkata, led by KKR co-owner Juhi Chawla Mehta in collaboration with the NGO 'Grow Billion Trees' to promote environmental stewardship.
A Bold Commitment to Sustainability
This year marks a significant enhancement in the initiative, with KKR committing to plant 10 trees for every run scored during IPL 2026, a tenfold increase compared to previous seasons, as stated in a recent announcement.
The Evolution of KKR's Green Efforts
KKR's journey towards sustainability has progressed over the years, evolving from the 'Plant a 6' campaign in 2017 to the broader 'Runs to Roots' initiative. The franchise has planted over 6,000 trees in the ecologically sensitive Sundarbans and added 4,669 trees across Kolkata in the last two IPL seasons, showcasing a commitment to achieving a more significant and measurable impact.
Innovative Waste Management Practices
In addition to tree planting, KKR's Smart Waste Management initiative at Eden Gardens and other venues has set a standard for sustainable sports practices, successfully recycling 53,858 kilograms of waste in the past two years.
Turning Passion into Ecological Action
KKR is dedicated to using its platform to promote eco-friendly behavior among fans, demonstrating how sports can drive substantial environmental change. The 'Runs to Roots' initiative embodies the transformation of cricket enthusiasm into actionable ecological efforts, reinforcing KKR's long-term dedication to sustainability and community engagement.
