Root Sets New Catching Record

On Day 3 of the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley, England's Test captain Joe Root made history by surpassing Australian star Steve Smith to become the leading fielder in Test cricket catches. Root achieved this feat by catching Pakistan's Azan Awais, who scored just nine runs off England's Jofra Archer during Pakistan's second innings. This catch elevated Root's total to 219, breaking Smith's previous record of 218. Currently, Root leads the list of most catches in Test cricket, with Smith following closely behind. Former Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid ranks third with 210 catches, while Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene and South Africa's Jacques Kallis have 205 and 200 catches, respectively.

Root Matches Tendulkar's Record

On Thursday, Joe Root equaled the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most fifties in Test cricket during the same match against Pakistan. Root scored his 68th Test fifty on Day 2, contributing 66 runs off 112 balls, which included 10 boundaries. This achievement places him alongside Tendulkar at the top for the most scores of 50 or more in Test matches. West Indies' Shivnarine Chanderpaul is next with 66 fifties, while Allan Border and Rahul Dravid each have 63.

Milestone as Captain

At 42, Root has also climbed the ranks for 50-plus scores as a captain in Tests, now sitting fifth on the all-time list. Graeme Smith leads this category with 61, followed by Ricky Ponting (54), Allan Border (51), and Misbah-ul-Haq (43). This latest milestone further cements Root's status as one of the top run-scorers in Test cricket.
