Japan's Air Force Loses Contact with Surveillance Drone

Tokyo: On Tuesday, Japan's air force reported losing contact with one of its long-range surveillance drones during a flight near the northwestern coast of the country.

Details regarding the specific mission of the uncrewed RQ-4B, commonly referred to as the Global Hawk, remain unclear.

According to the Air Self-Defense Force, the drone vanished from radar and was last detected approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) off Tottori's coastline earlier in the day.

This drone is part of a fleet of three Global Hawks stationed at Misawa Air Base in Aomori Prefecture.

These drones are highly valued for their capability to undertake extensive missions, flying at altitudes of around 60,000 feet (18.3 kilometers) and maintaining flight for up to 36 hours. They enable Japan to effectively monitor regions on the Asian mainland, including North Korea and China.

In response to evolving security challenges, Japan is enhancing its defense strategies, incorporating drones for combat, artificial intelligence, and innovative warfare techniques. As part of a five-year plan initiated in 2022, the nation has increased its defense budget to approximately 2% of its GDP to strengthen the offensive capabilities of its Self-Defense Forces against China's rising assertiveness.

The government led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is currently formulating new security and defense strategies, which are anticipated to be revealed later this year.
