New Delhi, July 1: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is set to arrive in New Delhi on Wednesday for a three-day official engagement from July 1 to 3, where she will take part in the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit.
This marks Takaichi's inaugural official visit to India since she took office, following an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During the summit, both nations are anticipated to assess and enhance their comprehensive bilateral cooperation while also addressing regional and global matters of shared concern, as per a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The visit comes after Prime Minister Modi's trip to Tokyo in August 2025 for the previous summit, underscoring the mutual commitment of both countries to strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
On June 16, PM Modi and PM Takaichi engaged in discussions during the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in France, where Modi emphasized the ongoing deepening of ties between India and Japan across various sectors.
“Had a great interaction with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan. India and Japan will continue to deepen ties in diverse sectors, with a priority on trade and investment,” PM Modi shared on X.
In May, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi met with PM Modi in New Delhi, reaffirming the crucial role of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership in promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
“Delighted to receive Mr. Toshimitsu Motegi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan. Reaffirmed the vital role of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership in advancing peace, stability, and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific and beyond,” PM Modi noted on X following their meeting.
Motegi highlighted that various initiatives are underway in security, economy, investment, innovation, and people-to-people exchanges, based on the Japan-India Joint Vision for the Next 10 Years established during PM Modi's visit to Japan last year. Both nations agreed to collaborate on realizing a robust and prosperous Indo-Pacific under an evolved Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP), according to a statement from the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
Both parties confirmed their commitment to achieving tangible outcomes in areas such as economic growth through investment, innovation, and knowledge sharing, alongside cooperation in economic security.
Minister Motegi also met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi to discuss various aspects of bilateral cooperation.
India and Japan enjoy a ‘Special Strategic and Global Partnership,’ with a friendship that has deep historical roots, characterized by spiritual affinity and strong cultural ties. There is a synergy between India's Act-East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision, based on the SAGAR principle and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), and Japan's Free and Open Indo-Pacific Vision.
