Call for Unity Against Terrorism

During a recent meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers in Tianjin, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar emphasized the necessity of a firm stance against terrorism. He referenced the recent terrorist incident in Pahalgam, India, which drew condemnation from the UN Security Council.

Jaishankar pointed out the intertwined issues of terrorism, separatism, and extremism, stating, "The attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, was a calculated effort to disrupt the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir and create religious discord."

The UN Security Council, of which India is a member, issued a strong statement condemning the attack and stressed the importance of holding those responsible accountable. Jaishankar reaffirmed India's commitment to pursuing justice for the victims.

He urged the SCO to uphold its founding principles by taking a resolute stance against terrorism. Jaishankar highlighted the need for member states to collaborate in stabilizing the global order and addressing the challenges posed by rising conflicts and economic instability.

He noted, "In recent years, we have witnessed an increase in conflicts and economic challenges. Our goal is to stabilize the global order and tackle issues that threaten our collective interests." Jaishankar called for cooperation based on mutual respect and the sovereignty of member states.

The minister also discussed India's initiatives in various sectors, including startup innovation and traditional medicine, stating, "India is committed to fostering collaboration in areas that benefit all member states, grounded in respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Jaishankar pointed out the need to resolve current issues, such as the lack of assured transit within the SCO, to enhance economic cooperation. He mentioned the potential of the International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC) to improve regional connectivity.

He stressed the importance of providing development assistance to Afghanistan, emphasizing the need for regional stability and support for the Afghan people. Jaishankar remarked, "Afghanistan has been a priority on the SCO agenda, and we must enhance our development efforts there."

He concluded by highlighting the significance of effective groupings like the SCO in a multi-polar world, stating, "Our ability to influence global affairs depends on our unity and shared objectives."

On the sidelines of the meeting, Jaishankar engaged in discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, highlighting the importance of bilateral relations.

This visit marks Jaishankar's first trip to China since the Galwan Valley clash in 2020, which had significantly impacted India-China relations. Earlier, he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, continuing a series of high-level interactions aimed at improving ties.
