Israeli Military Issues Warning Over Iran's Leadership Succession

Israeli Military's Stance on Iran's Leadership

On Sunday, the Israeli military declared its intent to target any successor to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was recently killed in coordinated strikes by the US and Israel in Tehran. In a message posted in Farsi on the social media platform X, the military emphasized that it would also go after individuals involved in the selection of Khamenei's successor. This warning specifically addressed the clerical assembly responsible for appointing the next leader of the Islamic Republic, which is anticipated to announce its decision shortly. The Israeli military cautioned, “We warn all those who intend to participate in the successor selection meeting that we will not hesitate to target you either. This is a warning!”

Consensus on Khamenei's Successor

Reports indicate that the clerical body tasked with selecting Iran's next supreme leader has reached a majority consensus. Ayatollah Mohammad-Mahdi Mirbagheri, a member of the Assembly of Experts, mentioned that while some hurdles remain, significant progress has been made. According to Iran's constitution, it is the 88-member Assembly of Experts that holds the authority to elect the supreme leader. In a video shared by Fars news agency on Telegram, Mirbagheri stated that extensive efforts have been made to establish leadership and that a decisive agreement has been reached. Another member, Hojjatoleslam Jafari, expressed hope that the Iranian populace would soon be satisfied with the outcome, noting that the delay in appointing the third leader is frustrating for all involved.

In the midst of these discussions, the Iranian Government, through its Consulate General in Mumbai, refuted claims from Israeli media that Mojtaba Khamenei had been designated as his father's successor. The consulate clarified in a post on X that reports regarding potential leadership candidates from Iran's Assembly of Experts lack official confirmation and are categorically denied. While Israeli sources suggested that Mojtaba Khamenei had been selected, no independent verification has emerged from Iranian state media. The situation in the Middle East has intensified significantly following the recent strikes that resulted in the deaths of Khamenei and other prominent figures.
