Israeli Military Investigates Image of Soldier Damaging Jesus Statue in Lebanon
Investigation Underway for Controversial Image
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are currently looking into the validity of a photo circulating on social media that allegedly depicts a soldier in southern Lebanon vandalizing a statue of Jesus Christ with a hammer. IDF spokesperson Nadav Shoshani stated on X that the military is assessing the authenticity of the image. He emphasized that if the photograph is confirmed to be genuine and recent, such actions contradict the values upheld by the IDF and the expected conduct of its personnel. A thorough investigation will be conducted, and appropriate measures will be taken based on the findings.
The image reportedly shows a soldier using a sledgehammer to strike the head of a statue representing the crucifixion of Jesus, which had fallen from its cross. Arab media reports indicate that the statue is situated in the Christian village of Debl, located near the Israeli border. Members of the Christian community in Ain Ebel, a nearby area in southern Lebanon, have suggested that the incident occurred in Debl, a Maronite Christian village approximately six kilometers northwest and about five kilometers northeast of the Israeli border community of Shtula.

Local officials have yet to confirm the specifics of the incident. The municipality of Debl acknowledged to AFP that the statue is indeed in the village but could not verify if it had sustained any damage. Wadie Abunassar, who coordinates the Christian Forum in the Holy Land, mentioned that he received the image from multiple sources and stressed the importance of taking the situation seriously. He stated, "It is impossible to remain silent in the face of such violations," and called for efforts to authenticate the incident and for formal complaints to be lodged if confirmed, ensuring accountability for those responsible.
This reported incident occurs amid escalating tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border. Lebanon's involvement in the regional conflict intensified in early March when Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group, launched rockets at Israel. In response, Israel conducted a series of strikes across Lebanon, followed by a ground incursion into southern regions. Although a ceasefire was established on Friday, Israeli forces continue to maintain a presence in parts of southern Lebanon. The IDF has not yet verified the authenticity of the image, and investigations are still in progress.
