London: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed the UK's belief that Iran may have been involved in a recent incident near a Royal Air Force (RAF) base located in a village in south-west England, which is currently under investigation by counter-terrorism police.

Five British men in their twenties were taken into custody on Sunday after police responded to an alert in Whelford, close to RAF Fairford, but they have since been released on bail.

This air base is significant as it accommodates numerous US Air Force personnel and operations, prompting US President Donald Trump to question the decision to grant bail to the suspects.

"There is indeed a strong indication that Iran played a part," Burnham stated to the press.

"However, this is a complex and serious police investigation, so I cannot provide further details at this time. I chaired a COBRA meeting on Monday, and we have been awaiting confirmation on what we can disclose, but we can now affirm our belief in Iran's involvement," he added.

Iran has categorically denied any participation, with its embassy in London branding the claims as 'Iranophobia.'

When asked about the rationale behind granting bail to the five suspects given the gravity of the situation, Burnham clarified, "It's important to understand that being released does not mean what people might assume. They are under strict bail conditions."

"The authorities are maintaining the situation under the closest scrutiny and control, and I assure you of that," he emphasized.

In related news, 'The Times' reported that one of the arrested individuals had contacted the authorities approximately an hour prior to the incident over the weekend.

The UK's counter-terror police, which is spearheading the investigation, announced on Tuesday that no explosive devices were discovered in the vehicles stopped near the base, although a quantity of petrol was recovered.

RAF Fairford has recently been utilized by the US military for airstrikes against Iran.

Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that the incident "clearly involves the hand of a foreign actor," without elaborating further.

This occurrence in Gloucestershire follows previous veiled threats made against the "British monarchy regime" by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in July.
