Iran's Supreme Leader Health Rumors Addressed by Senior Official
Clarification on Supreme Leader's Health
A high-ranking Iranian official has categorically refuted the circulating rumors regarding the health of Iran's newly appointed Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, asserting that he is in good health and spirits. Dr. Mohammad Hossein Ziyaeenia, who serves as the Deputy Representative of the Supreme Leader in India, addressed the rising concerns during a recent media interaction. He stated, “The condition of our Supreme Leader, Hazrat Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei, is, thank God, satisfactory.” Ziyaeenia emphasized that recent communications confirmed Khamenei's well-being.
He firmly dismissed claims suggesting that Mojtaba Khamenei had sustained serious injuries, labeling such reports as “inauthentic.” Since taking over leadership in March, following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, due to a US-Israeli strike on February 28, the new Supreme Leader has largely communicated through social media platforms like X and Telegram, as well as through messages broadcasted on state television.
Speculation Fueled by NYT Report
The rumors gained traction after a report from a prominent news outlet claimed that Mojtaba Khamenei had been “gravely injured” during the initial attacks. Citing unnamed senior Iranian officials, the report suggested that he had undergone several surgeries on one leg, faced limited mobility in one hand, and suffered significant facial burns that might necessitate plastic surgery. It also indicated that access to the Supreme Leader is severely restricted, with only a select group of medical personnel permitted to visit him. Furthermore, it was noted that high-ranking officials and Revolutionary Guard commanders avoid visiting him due to concerns that Israel could track his whereabouts.
According to the report, communications with Mojtaba Khamenei are conducted through a meticulous human chain, utilizing handwritten notes delivered by trusted couriers traveling discreetly to evade detection.
Response from Mojtaba Khamenei
In light of the report, Mojtaba Khamenei took to social media to denounce what he termed “the enemy’s media operations” aimed at destabilizing national unity and security. Dr. Ziyaeenia's remarks mark the first official rebuttal from a close associate of the Supreme Leader regarding the health speculations. It remains uncertain whether these denials will quell the ongoing rumors, particularly as Mojtaba Khamenei continues to maintain a low public profile over two months into his leadership.
