Iran's New Supreme Leader in Critical Condition Amid Ongoing Tensions

Health Crisis of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei

Reports indicate that Iran's newly appointed supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, is currently incapacitated and receiving medical care in Qom, a significant religious city in Iran. According to a diplomatic memo cited by various sources, Khamenei is in a critical state, having lost consciousness due to a serious medical issue, which has rendered him unable to participate in governmental decisions. This situation follows a tragic incident where he was reportedly injured during airstrikes conducted by the US and Israel that resulted in the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.

The memo, believed to be based on intelligence from American and Israeli agencies, marks the first public disclosure of the new Supreme Leader's location. Qom holds great importance in Shia Islam and is recognized as Iran's religious hub.

Burial Arrangements for Ali Khamenei

Additionally, preparations for the burial of the former supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, are reportedly underway in Qom. The memo suggests that intelligence agencies have noted activities related to the construction of a large mausoleum, which may house multiple graves, potentially including those of other family members alongside Ali Khamenei. There is speculation that Mojtaba Khamenei might also be interred there.

Despite the serious nature of these developments, there have been no official comments from either the United States or Iran regarding the memo.

US Claims on Mojtaba Khamenei's Condition

Last month, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that Mojtaba Khamenei had sustained injuries during the ongoing conflict. He remarked, "We know the new so-called, not-so-supreme leader is wounded and likely disfigured." Mojtaba took over leadership after his father was killed in a bombing at the onset of the US-Israeli military operations against Iran.

Iran's Acknowledgment

Iran has confirmed that its new Supreme Leader was injured in the airstrike that claimed his father's life. The attack on February 28 also resulted in the deaths of Mojtaba's mother, his wife Zahra Haddad-Adel, and one of his sons. Since assuming the role of Supreme Leader, Mojtaba has not made any public appearances, although several statements attributed to him have been broadcast by Iranian media.
