Iran's Lavan Island Oil Refinery Hit Amid US-Iran Ceasefire

Attack on Oil Refinery Raises Tensions

On Wednesday, an oil refinery located on Iran's Lavan Island was reportedly targeted in what officials termed an "enemy attack." This incident occurred just hours after a ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States took effect. The National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company indicated that the facility was struck around 10:00 AM local time, as reported by Shana, the oil ministry's news outlet. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and emergency teams were dispatched to manage a fire that erupted at the site.

The attack has sparked concerns regarding the stability of the recently announced truce, which aimed to alleviate rising tensions following weeks of threats. Speculation regarding the perpetrator of the strike quickly circulated online. Various sources, citing Iranian media, suggested that the assault was executed by Mirage 2000-9 fighter jets from the United Arab Emirates. This claim gained traction through social media commentary, including a post by commentator Mario Nawfal, who stated, "Iranian media claims the attacks on Iran's refineries in the Persian Gulf earlier today were carried out by UAE Mirage 2000-9 fighters. If true, this is very significant and very concerning." However, no official confirmation has been provided by Iran, the UAE, or the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company regarding this assertion. Additionally, there is no independently verified information about the identity of the attackers.

Claims connecting the attack to UAE Mirage 2000-9 jets remain unverified. Meanwhile, Israel's military has denied any involvement in the incident. Israeli military spokesperson Lt Col Nadav Shoshani stated, "No, (we) weren't involved." Although Iran has not publicly assigned blame to any specific nation, it referred to the strike as a "cowardly attack." In retaliation, Iran announced missile and drone strikes targeting both Kuwait and the UAE. Authorities in the UAE have yet to respond to these allegations.

This strike occurred shortly after a ceasefire agreement involving Iran, the United States, and Israel was reached. US President Donald Trump characterized the deal as a "total and complete victory," announcing a two-week pause in military actions against Iran. In exchange, Iran agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping lane for global oil supplies. Trump mentioned on Truth Social that Tehran had committed to the "complete, immediate, and safe opening" of this vital waterway. Despite the ceasefire, the recent events indicate that hostilities may still be ongoing, with reports of additional incidents in various parts of the Gulf.
