Tensions Escalate in the Strait of Hormuz

Tehran: Since the United States implemented a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz on April 13, a total of 27 vessels have retreated while attempting to navigate through the blockade, as reported by The New York Times. This blockade was enforced following unsuccessful peace negotiations between the US and Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan. Recently, reports emerged indicating that an Iranian tanker successfully breached this blockade.

The New York Times report came just a day after the US announced the seizure of an Iranian tanker attempting to bypass the blockade. This incident has complicated diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between the two nations. On Monday, the US Navy tracked, boarded, and seized an Iranian cargo ship named 'Touska' near the Strait of Hormuz. The US stated that it fired upon the vessel after it crossed the blockade line, disregarding multiple warnings. In response, Iran has promised a swift retaliation, with reports suggesting that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted US warships in the vicinity. This interception marks the first of its kind since the blockade was established in this crucial waterway.

Iranian Supertanker Delivers Crude Oil: On Tuesday, it was reported that an Iranian supertanker successfully breached the US naval blockade and is poised to deliver a significant shipment of crude oil. The very large crude carrier (VLCC), owned by the National Iranian Tanker Company, reportedly set sail from Iran in late March 2026, heading towards the Riau Islands in Southeast Asia. According to tanker tracking firm TankerTrackers.com, the vessel transferred around two million barrels of crude oil to another supertanker in the area before making its return.

According to Iran's Fars News Agency, citing data from TankerTrackers.com, the tanker has reportedly re-entered Iranian waters by crossing the US blockade line and is expected to arrive at Kharg Island soon. The report stated, "This tanker unloaded its 2 million barrels of crude oil and then returned home through the blockade line." Meanwhile, Iranian state media has released a new video asserting that the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains under Tehran's control.
