Iranian Drone Attacks Target Kuwait's Oil Refinery Amid Regional Tensions

Iranian Drones Strike Kuwaiti Oil Facility

On Friday, Kuwait reported that its Mina Al-Ahmadi oil refinery was once again attacked by Iranian drones, resulting in fires across multiple units. This incident follows a similar attack on Thursday that also caused fires. The Mina Al-Ahmadi facility has a capacity to process approximately 730,000 barrels of oil daily and is one of Kuwait's three major refineries. Firefighters are currently working to extinguish the flames, and fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries from this latest assault.

The drone strike coincided with Kuwait's observance of Eid al-Fitr, a significant holiday marking the conclusion of Ramadan. In response to the attack, the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation has temporarily shut down the affected units. Due to ongoing conflicts, Kuwait has faced challenges in exporting oil, as it relies on maritime routes through the Persian Gulf and the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which has been a frequent target for Iranian operations.

This escalation follows an Israeli airstrike on Iran’s South Pars offshore natural gas field earlier in the week, which has led to increased Iranian aggression towards energy infrastructure in Gulf Arab nations.

Diplomatic Engagement Amid Rising Tensions

PM Modi Engages with Kuwaiti Leadership

In light of the escalating situation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a conversation with Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, the Crown Prince of Kuwait, on Wednesday. During this discussion, they addressed the changing dynamics in West Asia and the importance of regional stability, as stated by MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during an inter-ministerial briefing.

Jaiswal noted, "Our Prime Minister expressed India's strong condemnation of the attacks on Kuwait's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized the necessity of ensuring safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz as a priority for India." Both leaders concurred on the importance of ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region. Modi also expressed gratitude to the Crown Prince for his support regarding the safety of the Indian community in Kuwait.
