Incident Involving Oil Tanker


Muscat: An oil tanker flying the Palau flag, named 'Skylight', was reportedly attacked by Iranian forces close to Oman's coastline. The vessel was navigating through the Strait of Hormuz, approximately five nautical miles from Khasab Port. A swift response was initiated to safeguard the crew members on board. Among the 20 individuals aboard, 15 were identified as Indian nationals. Reports suggest that the tanker was struck by Iranian forces. According to Oman's Maritime Security Centre, all crew members were successfully evacuated, which included 15 Indians and five Iranians. A video showing smoke rising from the tanker has circulated online.



Reports from Gulf News indicate that medical assistance was rendered to the injured crew members. Initial assessments revealed that four crew members suffered injuries of varying degrees and were subsequently transported for medical care. Omani officials have yet to disclose the full extent of the damage to the tanker or the specifics of the attack.


This incident occurs against a backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly following a significant offensive by the United States and Israel against Iran, which resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. In response, Iran has launched retaliatory strikes targeting various Gulf nations, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain.


In addition to Khamenei, key figures such as Iranian Army Chief of Staff Abdul Rahim Mousavi and Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh were also reported killed in the Israeli-US operations. Iranian state media, IRNA, has indicated that more military commanders were lost, with their identities to be disclosed later.


Earlier, the Israeli Air Force confirmed that its jets executed strikes on military installations within Iran, reportedly resulting in the deaths of seven senior Iranian defense officials, including Ali Shamkhani and Mohammad Pakpour. The Israeli Air Force stated in a post on X that their operations effectively targeted military leadership, enhancing global security.
